The best way to make your family vacation as drama free and as memorable as possible is to plan ahead and prepare in advance. It is always good to be organized. However, sometimes no matter how well you plan, your trip may still end up with a few mishaps that you could not have anticipated. These can make for some of the best vacation stories though.

Set a budget for the family vacation that is realistic. It is important to remember though that there may be expenses that arise throughout your travels that you did not plan for. If you will be travelling by car, there is always the chance that your vehicle will break down and you will need to get it fixed. You might also want to stop somewhere along the way to do some shopping or visit a tourist attraction. Your budget should not be so strict that it does not account for those little vacation extras that arise.

You may have your heart set on getting on a plane and flying to Europe or visiting a tropical location. However, the further from home you venture, the more you will spend. Staying closer to home can be just as fun if you find ways to make it that way. It can also offer a means of stretching your vacation dollars further.

Go online and find out what opportunities for vacation plans await you in your own state. Look for carnivals, festivals, wildlife parks, and other enjoyable activities that can be shared by the entire family. A family vacation does not have to be expensive or involve long hours of travelling to be exciting. There are likely to be plenty of attractions to enjoy if you take the time to find them.

Look for activities that you can all enjoy together. If you choose an activity that only dad will like, boredom and frustration is likely to set in for the younger members of the household. That is the last thing you want to happen on a family vacation. You want enjoyment and happiness to rule the day while you are away from home. Do not try to force your children to pretend that they want to do something when they don't. Figure out what interests you as a family unit and then plan activities and outings around that. Public parks, water parks, zoos, museums, theaters, sports centers, and aquariums all have lots to offer.

When you are planning your trip, sit down together and have a discussion about your upcoming excursion. Give every member the opportunity to have the floor and to talk about what they would like to do on the trip. Pool all of the ideas and decide how many of them you can make happen. You want everyone to have a great time and to have input into the planning. Don't leave anyone out.
